In class, we watched a Ted Talk by professor Dan Ariely on What Makes Us Feel Good About Our Work?
These are my thoughts after listening to his arguments:
I think it is very compelling to understand that a lot of what we do and own is tied to our feelings and our effort. Much like how a picture, an object, or an animal might be more significant to some people than to others because of the sentimental value that it sparks in us. Hearing Ariely say that ignoring is almost as bad as destroying people’s work in front of them is really eye-opening. We want people to acknowledge us, and even receiving negative feedback feels more special, solely because that would indicate that someone actually took the time to evaluate our work instead of just pushing it aside like it’s worthless. It emphasizes the importance of the value of employees in all companies really. At the end of the day, big companies depend on all of their workers, regardless of the type of work they provide. Just like in a bee colony, everyone plays an important role in the infrastructure, and a queen would be nothing without all her workers.
